having helped launch the sugarhouse label with his paradise forum brethren, jamie paul gets a chance to show off his talents on his debut 12inch, adding to the labels already impressive catalogue with another swathe of classy house jams with a modern twist. double g definitely sports the chops for the peak of the night, but it s also shot through with a welcome weirdness and a fuzzy warmth that should find favour with a wide range of djs. even so is a more laid back, bumping affair that matches the smooth finish of the a-side, but says something different altogether. label mate maurice jnr meanwhile serves up a remix of even so that nudges the delicate tones in a techier direction

paul brcic (aka brtschitsch) hat sich mit seinen produktionen ziemlich rar gemacht und das ist auch gut so! denn umso fokussierter arbeitet er an den wenigen veröffentlichungen, die unter seinem namen noch erscheinen. die reflektion ep auf kriemhilds nachtkuss ist seit längerer pause eine ep, die den sinn hinter dem credo des gezielten produzierens beweist. detailverliebter brschitsch sound irgendwo zwischen house und techno, dort wo brtschitsch 1994 begann sich auf den weg unzähliger soundreisen zu begeben.

italian artist paul santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on soundcloud, but now with his venetian causeway label hes able to prove the clout to be found in his music. on this 10inch the arch title generic house traxx actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. please him on the b side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

paul blackford returns to cpu this time donning a 7inch downtempo tip. light years vinyl takes 2 of the highlights from the accompanying lp, all of which demonstrate his versatility in expressing his hip hop and funk influences from an electronic music perspective. on first pass you might think you are listening to nightmares on wax, but without the heavy sampling as blackford favours creating his sounds from scratch. comparisons to photeks hidden camera can be made in terms of atmosphere but keeping things within a slower trip hop framework. light years is for chilling out, but theres a strong temptation to mix hip-hop vocals over the top due to the lps solid instrumental foundations.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. paul woolford has been seriously spreading his wings of late, becoming omni-present by landing his tracks with ease on labels like xl recordings, running back, houndstooth, hotflush and aus music. not wanting to be shackled by genres, paul comfortably serves up a wide variety of curveballs, from the technoid charge of his 4/4 persuasions to the exhilarating warped hardcore & jungle breaks of his much loved special request project. and so it’s with welcome arms that edible usher him to our release schedule, give him the comfy sofa and let him rip it up with two havoc-inducing cuts that are already a staple in label boss eats everything’s dj sets. title track ‘chaos’ finds paul in a particularly warped mode, bleepy synth pulses oscillate wildly over a granite hard beat as a single sub-bass tone drives the brain-scrambling flurry of modular tones into overdrive. a hydrochloric synth riff settles the bed, but only until the next haul of chaotic blips come firing out of the speakers - highly effective, and possibly deranged warehouse tackle. a future classic. flip side, and woolford shows off some decidedly more soulful chops on ‘meditate . a vocal hook plays against a dubwise bass line and ascending 909 rides, as a seductive and transcendental string arpeggio creeps to the fore and demands a breakdown of its own, serving up a serious bucket load of emotion. not a dry eye in the house.

copenhagen’s music for dreams continue their string of pearls in 2016 with the 12” release of apiento & lx’s dish. at the request of cutting edge danish designer trine lindegaard, paul byrne (aka apiento) created this music to accompany her dish project - a playful fusion of food, fashion and art - when it premiered at 2016 copenhagen fashion week. for the project, lindegaard worked with members of integration organization itmv in copenhagen to produce clothing items based on their favourite food dishes, apiento and regular collaborator uk-based house producer lx, used the recorded interviews of their discussions as raw material with cut-up samples of the women’s voices woven into the music for the runway show. the result is an ethereal and avant-garde mix of crisp beats and featherlight percussion blended in a fresh and modern oriental-flavoured balearic groove packed with gorgeous flutes and kalimbas. the powerful dub on the flip-side brings a heavier more trippy feel geared firmly for the dancefloor. as well as a string of great remixes and edits as apiento, paul byrne is also well known for his behind-thescenes work with labels like junior boy s own, international feel and deewee, and for his highly influential blog test pressing. limited edition vinyl - don’t miss.
